We have over 50 cruisers at the club. Many race regularly at the club and some have had success at other races and regattas.

Here are details of some of the boats and their owners.


Beth Rose

She is a Roamer 36 motor ketch, built in Sandwich in 1978 with a Mermaid low line 72 bhp engine. Before Dave and Martin bought her she had one owner from new and had spent a number of years in the Med.

'Bounty Hunter' a 1992 Hunter Horizon 21 Pocket Cruiser. Based at Scarborough since summer 2011.

EnZo - Sonata sailed by 'Team Smith' (Margaret and Andy). Joined the fleet in June 2015 after some renovation work since being purchased in November 2013. Now racing regularly in Scarborough and hope more Sonatas will join us in the future.

Juliette Jonny Barker's "Juliette" is a Hawk 20 Dayboat, currently the smallest boat in the racing fleet


A Hydro 28 designed by David Thomas and built by Nick Stratton. The Hydro, built in the 1970s was a precursor to many of David Thomas's yachts including the Impala.  Kassy is currently owned by Mark Hutchinson, Mike Holder, Doug Williamson and Chris Matson.
Chris and his then partner Wayne Suggitt dug her out of the mud in the Humber and spent two years bringing her back to life.  Mark, Mike and Doug have continued to upgrade her as she is a good, safe sea boat.
Kassy has a strong history of sailing around the Humber and at one stage completed the Azores two handed race.

Martina came to Scarborough from Denmark in 2001 when we bought her.

She has done the North Sea race and cruised through Holland, but work demands have limited her excursions in recent years.

A stubborn little boat with a mind of her own who moves entirely randomly in reverse!

A good sea boat.


Midnight Express IV

Midnight Express IV is a Dehler 32 owned by Martin and Jan Stallard. Racing, enjoying sailing and eating Jan's homemade cakes are the priorities of the crew.





Pete and Emma are keen participants in two handed long distance races in Ruffian, to us, as well as the challenge that two handed racing presents, it is equally about the camaraderie and the friendships that are made and when not doing that they are regular competitors in SYC’s local bay racing, and coastal races.

Notable achievements are:  Three Round Britain & Ireland Races, Three Azores and back race, the Dutch 1000 mile Race, The Norwegian Bergen, Shetland, Bergen Race, The Yachting Monthly Triangle Race, The Round Ireland Race, The Fastnet Race and more North Sea Races than they care to remember!

Ruffian is a Sigma 36 and for us, offers a reasonable amount of comfort and also a fair turn of speed that is needed for the longer distance, endurance events.



Shillelagh is a 1983 Sigma 33 OOD. Phil Thompson bought her in Dublin 2012 keeping her in Scotland for one season before bringing her to Scarborough.

Between the early 2000s and 2010 she had a very successful career in the National Yacht Club Dublin where she was one of the top boats in club racing and the Sigma national championships.

She was originally named Night Vision and berthed in the Solent area.


SUNA is a 1936 Abeking and Rasmussen yacht built to the 30sqm racing rule which was set up at the turn of the 20th Century and remains popular in the Baltic  to this day. Originally named  'AEGIR' she is one of the the 'Windfall Fleet' of over 100 high quality wooden offshore yachts taken as reparations from Germany after the 2nd World War.

Andy Wiles bought her from the remaining member of the syndicate in 2008 in Fleetwood where she was starting to deteriorate once again. She spent a few seasons in Hartlepool before coming ashore for a major refit and spruce up in Goole.  She was relaunched in 2013 and arrived in Scarborough on 1st June that year.


TROIKA: The Sequest SJ320 was designed to close a gap in the market for a production racer cruiser yacht. Designer Stephen Jones was commissioned to design the yacht. The first SJ320 was launched and built in 1994 and subsequently won Cowes Week. The SJ320 went onto dominate this event for the next four years. She has a draft of 1.97 metres and a beam of 3.15 metres, with a displacement of 4110kg and at, just short of 32ft long makes her an excellent cruiser/racer. 

Troika is a 1996 model which was originally raced very competitively from the Isle of Man, owned by a consortium of businessmen,bringing home a number of trophies.She was sold on and was moved North to The Clyde where again she enjoyed racing success. She was bought by Dennis House and Tony Nicholson in 2008 to be based in Scarborough and has been raced with SYC since. She has competed in many local bay and coastal races,sailed South to compete twice in the ‘Round the Island Race’ and has participated in the SYC annual North Sea Race’ on one occasion being the first arrival but not a winner on handicap.

Dennis has now retired (2015), after 60 years of sailing. Troika is still currently owned by Tony and raced with David Smith who now has a vested interest and split the skippering duties. They are hoping with the assistance of regular crew to be more competitive in the coming years.


Vado is an Aphrodite 29 built in Sweden and was bought in Holland in 2005 by current owners Steve & Win Russell. Since then she has crossed the North Sea most years with some successes in the SYC North Sea Race. Since being bought she has had many minor modifications to make her more competitive and safer to sail. She is a joy to sail in most conditions but enjoys medium airs the best.


Valkyrie “chooser of the slain”

The latest command for ‘Cap,n Bucko’ is Valkyrie, a Beneteau 210. Once he had learned to accept the boats  french pedigree, (Roger says the only good thing to come out of France  is the cross channel ferry to Britain) he and his crew have enjoyed their first seasons sailing. Not only can they race competitively, they can also get the cockpit table out for some ‘après sail’  pot noodles, they couldnt do that on a 707. And yes, the colour theme throughout is pink.
