SYC & Filey Sailing club BBQ
It was on a bleak foggy wet winters day that Simon Fry called by my house to make plans for Jaunting / Cruisers fun in the coming summer. A quick look at the tide tables and we chose Filey for a beach barbeque on July 19th With low water around 18.00 hrs it was perfect for us to sail as close to the beach as possible and go ashore for beach party fun and then either return back to Scarborough or anchor further out in the bay overnight.
Picture the scene. A beautiful summers evening with a dozen SYC yachts at anchor on a flat calm Filey Bay. Filey Sailing Club rib ferrying crews to the beach as the dinghy racing used our yachts as race marks. Music, laughter and the smell of a Barbie wafting along the shore, perfect.
So it was on a bleak foggy wet July 19th with the shoreline shrouded behind a thick layer of fog that we all opted to drive to Filey. As luck (Yes, we had ‘some’ luck) would have it the rain stopped for long enough to fire up the barbeque, flip the burgers, turn over the chicken skewers and roll a few sausages so they might at least get an even tan. Filey Sailing Club could not have been more accommodating sharing in the irony and jokes of the weather we had been dealt…. and it was great fun ! Not anything like we had planned but in true SYC spirit we made it fun none the less.
It could have been much worse, all the while three scantily clad (or hardly clad) young ladies were on a photo shoot at the shoreline in the fog. They left shivering for a waiting car and as they passed by our Rear Commodore couldn’t resist the urge to offer them a sausage.
The next mini Jaunt (subject to weather) is set for August Bank Holiday. Curry in Hartlepool + Fish and Chips in Whitby … are we blessed to live on the UK NE Coast or what?
