Training Information
The RYA Day Skipper (Theory Course)
Commitment:
Starting on 9th October to 19th March 2025 (break over Christmas and New Year)
The course is planned to cover at least 40 hours of instruction,
spread over 22 weeks. It involves 2 hours from 1900 to 2100 on
Wednesday evenings with some homework There will be breaks for
coffee etc. Smoking is not allowed any where in the club, except on
the balcony (with consideration for others). There will be a two
week break over Christmas and New Year. Two 90 minute tests are
required (midway and at the end of the course). It is anticipated
there will be no more than 10 students. Temporary membership of SYC whilst participating on the course is included if you are a non
member. This allows you to use the bar after the class finishes. You

Course Content:
Navigation, meteorology, IRPCS (rules of the road), safety.
It equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night sailing.
The cost of the course is £200-00, this includes the RYA Day
Skipper pack (which contains everything required).. An initial
deposit of £50.00 is required to enrol with the balance payable on the first evening of the course . Payable by cash, cheque or BACS transfer to

Minimum Pre Course Experience:
None but it will help if you have done some sailing.
Ability after the Course:
Background knowledge to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

VHF DSC Online, the exam can be done at SYC. Exam is 2 hours.
The course requires about 10 hours to complete plus the exam time.
Professional Practices and Responsibilities. This is online only, required for commercial endorsement of a practical certificate.
Required to operate speedboats, day trips, and angling boats in Scarborough.
